the man with a clean face needs to keep his face clean. whereas a man who has dirtied his face would look the same, no matter how much more drt came on it... moral of the story: a person with a clean reputation needs to maintian it. conversely, a person who has soiled his reputation once, will have to carry it around, no matter if he doesnt see himself in the same situation.
