What are you passionate about?

Few months ago I was sitting with my ladies after long time catching up with things been happening in our lives, sharing our experiences and tips how to overcome them, a topic came up about what each person is passionate about are willing to turn it to a career beside their current one.

As a I listened to everyone, I realised I was the only one who is not passionate like them, I love to be a composer and musician, I love to take up an instrument or to, but all that doesn't generate money or good income, I was feeling totally lost,  specially that I'm in my mid thirties and I feel like I don't have a porpoise or a steady hobby or a passion in doing something I enjoy doing.

It took me a while until I opened up to my sister and she said that I'm passionate about something, is analysis & scripting (coding), I realised that she was right, only with proper guidance I can become a consultant.

Beware of the next fire drill!!!

A fire alarm rang at 4 pm in a large office campus when almost all employees were present (approx 5,000 people ).

As per past fire-drill practices, the entire office was quickly evacuated within 3 minutes, and all employees gathered outside the complex in designated areas waiting for further announcement.

Before long, the fire drill officer in-charge made the following broadcast over their loud-speakers system :

"My dear colleagues : With sincere regret, I have been asked to announce that for many of you, this will be your last evacuation drill with us. Due to the on-going recession and bad business climate, the company is laying off almost 50% of its staff.

So when this announcement finishes, I ask all of you to move back into the building. And if your swipe-card does not work, then it means that you have been laid off, in which case you will not be allowed inside, and all your personal belongings will be couriered to you by tomorrow.

The company is using this innovative, never-before approach as we do not want to choke our email system with lay-off notices and farewell messages going by the thousands, and we also wish to avoid any fighting inside the office and the consequent security issues for all staff.
We hope you have had a rewarding career with us. Now please move back in… and good luck ! "

Think out of the Box..

A friend have dropped me this article, from unknown source, and thought of sharing the same with you, it might change your thoughts.

Every company has a performance appraisal system in place to measure the effectiveness of its employees.

Employees are normally rated in most of the companies in the above categories. Apart from the above non performance category is also there, which is not depicted here . Needless to say everyone wants to be rated Outstanding.

What is the yard stick and how do you measure these aspects?
Employee "A" in a company walked up to his manager and asked what my job is for the day?

The manager took "A" to the bank of a river and asked him to cross the river and reach the other side of the bank.

"A" completed this task successfully and reported back to the manager about the completion of the task assigned. The manager smiled and said "GOOD JOB"

Next day Employee "B" reported to the same manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task as above to this person also.

The Employee "B' before starting the task saw Employee "C" struggling in the river to reach the other side of the bank. He realized "C" has the same task.

Now "B" not only crossed the river but also helped "C" to cross the river.
"B" reported back to the manager and the manager smiled and said "VERY GOOD JOB"

The following day Employee "Q" reported to the same manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task again.

Employee "Q" before starting the work did some home work and realized "A", "B" & "C" all has done this task before. He met them and understood how they performed.

He realized that there is a need for a guide and training for doing this task.

He sat first and wrote down the procedure for crossing the river, he documented the common mistakes people made, and tricks to do the task efficiently and effortlessly.

Using the methodology he had written down he crossed the river and reported back to the manager along with documented procedure and training material.

The manger said "Q" you have done an "EXCELLENT JOB".

The following day Employee "O" reported to the manager and asked him the job for the day. The manager assigned the same task again.

"O" studied the procedure written down by "Q" and sat and thought about the whole task.

He realized company is spending lot of money in getting this task completed. He decided not to cross the river, but sat and designed and implemented a bridge across the river and went back to his manager and said, "You no longer need to assign this task to any one".

The manager smiled and said "Outstanding job 'O'. I am very proud of you."

What is the difference between A, B, Q & O????????

Many a times in life we get tasks to be done at home, at office, at play….,

Most of us end up doing what is expected out of us. Do we feel happy? Most probably yes. We would be often disappointed when the recognition is not meeting our expectation.

Let us compare ourselves with "B". Helping some one else the problem often improves our own skills. There is an old proverb (I do not know the author) "learn to teach and teach to learn". From a company point of view "B" has demonstrated much better skills than "A" since one more task for the company is completed.

"Q" created knowledge base for the team. More often than not, we do the task assigned to us without checking history. Learning from other's mistake is the best way to improve efficiency. This knowledge creation for the team is of immense help. Re-usability reduces cost there by increases productivity of the team. "Q" demonstrated good "team-player" skills,

Now to the outstanding person, "O" made the task irrelevant; he created a Permanent Asset to the team.

If you notice B, Q and O all have demonstrated "team performance" over an above individual performance; also they have demonstrated a very invaluable characteristic known as "INITIATIVE".

Initiative pays of every where whether at work or at personal life. If you put initiative you will succeed. Initiative is a continual process and it never ends. This is because this year's achievement is next year's task. You cannot use the same success story every year.

The story provides an instance of performance, where as measurement needs to be spread across at least 6-12 months. Consequently performance should be consistent and evenly spread.

Out-of-Box thinkers are always premium and that is what every one constantly looks out for. Initiative, Out-of-Box thinking and commitment are the stepping stone to success.

Initiative should be life long. Think of out of the box.

Young graduate Egyptians started to overcome the unemployment barrier by taking care of elderly people as a new career in Egypt. I found this gesture, is good for them as persons and sociality too. It makes them more aware of human rights and family bonds.

AIESEC in Oman

The following article is from TheWeek Issue 297, the whole purpose is to develop the local workforces and explore them to the internationally, which will benefit both the individual and the country.

One of the world's largest international organisations for students, AISEC, is all set to start operations in Oman with an innovative foreign internship programme.

At 19, Saqib Khan is like any other student within the Majan College premises in Muttrah but for one thing. Come February next year this third year student of computer networking will be off to Keio in Japan for a three-month internship with Kiban, a technology company dealing with e-commerce. Saqib, will be the first person rom Oman to go on an internship arranged by the international youth organisation AIESEC.

He will be the first of many hundred more young people from the sultanate who will be off in the coming years on an exchange programme that opens the doors for Omani youth to develop their skills abroad. At the same time, AIESEC’s programme will offer local busines-ses a chance to tap into an international talent pool especially for temporary roles.

At the moment, AIESEC, with 32,000 active members, is present in more than 108 countries and territories around the world. We have a deep history in the Middle East-North Africa region, dating back to the 1960s,” said Brett Borkan, director of business development, AIESEC official extension to Oman.

With student chapters in Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Jordan, Iran, Bahrain, Qatar, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Oman is logically the next step in our efforts,” he added.

Although AIESEC has been present in Oman for some time now, their official launch is expected to take place at year-end. The organisation itself, which is run entirely by students and recent graduates of higher education, was launched 60 years ago in 1948 in Stockholm with just seven member countries.

The aim was to promote peaceful relations between these seven nations in a world fresh out World War II. In its first year the then fledgling organisation arranged 89 traineeships. Interestingly enough, many of these early internship exc-hange programmes were between France and Germany, a country that had occupied much of France during the war.

But how does all this make a difference to people in Oman? Kenneth MacFarlane, senior country partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), which is AIESEC’s global partner and also its local partner in the sultanate, has this to say. “PWC absorbs around ten Omanis into its permanent staff each year.

The main attraction for me is to get Omanis on outbound internships where they can gain international exposure,” he expl-ained, adding that this would help build a young national workforce that would come armed with knowledge of how things work outside their own country.

MacFarlane’s argument is vindicated by the views of inbound interns who are already working in Oman. “I have already worked with PWC in Mexico City. I wanted to see how the firm operated elsewhere so that I could learn about its global operation methods,” said 25-year-old Rebeca Rubi Alvarado, a student of accounting from Mexico. Yet, the idea of overseas internships is not the only attraction for AIESEC’s members.

A non-profit global organisation run like a business house, it gives its members the opportunity to try their hand at being professionals before even exiting the academic world. “Firstly, I enjoy the sense of responsibility that comes with being a key member of the organisation. Secondly, as the vice-president of marketing, I get practice in reality what I learn in the confines of the classroom,” said Hasna Sultan, who recently graduated from the Modern College of Business and is the vice- president of marketing for AIESEC’s local committee in Bausher.

For Rashad al Jamali, president, local committee, Bausher, AIESEC, it was the whole professional aura of its members that drew him in. “I got to know about AIESEC when Brett and a friend were promoting the organisation in our college. At the time I thought the whole thing seemed a lot more professional than anything else,” he said.

Since then Rashad has attended two international AIESEC conferences, one in Bahrain and another in Tunisia, and the only thing that he thinks could be a deterrent to more people joining the organisation is the need for time management. “It can get difficult to manage time on occasion, especially during exams,” he said, adding that he would nevertheless recommend becoming a member.

Meanwhile Saqib’s initial excitement about going to Japan has given way to apprehensions about the change in environment. “Language is probably going to be a big problem. Unlike in Oman where most people speak in English, everything in Japan is in Japanese,” he explained, adding with a nervous smile, “And I don’t know a syllable of Japanese.” According to 26-year-old Kristina Mader, a student of finance and tax audit from Germany, the only way to get over such apprehensions is to take the plunge and find out what the situation on the ground is really like rather than depend on second hand experience or the opinions of others.

Back home, everyone has a negative opinion of the Middle East region because of what they read or see in the media. But no one really knows what things are like here. Only after coming here do you realise that not all of the Middle East is a conflict zone,” she said.

Besides, according to Adriana Marinaro, senior manager, assurance/business advisory services, PWC, being an AIESEC member might even work out in your favour when it comes to employment.

Having AIESEC on your CV immediately communicates that you are more likely to be a dedicated employee,” said Adriana, who was a member of the organisation for three years and is now coordinating PWC’s activities with AIESEC in Oman. So, does being a member of AIESEC mean a ticket to overseas internships, fancy designations and an easier route to a job? Not quite. “You could either choose to be a passive member or someone who is actively involved. Most people who benefit from their time as AIESEC members are the latter,” said Adriana.

After all you get what you give. Email BrettB@aiesecom.org or log on to www.aiesec.org for more details

H E Dr abdullah al sarmi undersecretary, ministry of higher education, speaks to THEWEEK

What will AIESEC be able to accomplish for Oman and its youth?
AIESEC, the world’s largest international student organisation and the second largest organisation registered with the United Nations (UN), has taken recent steps in a bold initiative to bring new human development opportunities to the youth in the Arab region.

In Oman, AIESEC will work with higher education institutions to give students the opportunity to participate in its empowering programmes. These would offer students the chance to participate in conferences with youth from across the region and the world and in skills training from local and global businesses in Oman.

In addition, they will help develop a sense of community and giving back through cultural programmes; foster a greater understanding of what is happening in the Omani society and in the world. What exactly is the ministry’s role in the establishment of AIESEC in Oman?

The ministry has already liaised with the government sectors involved in this regard. AIESEC is now registered in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, as an independent body, and can exercise its functions, one of which is to sponsor visits of inbound interns to Oman.

The ministry has also encouraged public and private higher education institutions to participate and contribute with AIESEC in order to activate its noble functions. What sets AIESEC’s internship programme apart from others? The exchange programme will open the doors for Omani youth to develop their skills in any of the countries where AIESEC currently operates, and at the same time give Omani businesses the chance to access an international talent pool to fulfill their business needs in temporary roles while building future local capacity.

The Sickness Disease

On 6th of Aug 2008, I came across an intresting article in Arabic titiled 'مرض التمارض' (The Sickness Disease) by Aqeel Abdulkhaliq Al Lawati (عقيل عبدالخالق اللواتي). It is about how people pretend to be sick.

The writer talks about how thouse people take the advantage of pretending to be sick, how ,they abuse the system, how the doctors profit out of it, how this disease became like a virus that infects our society.

The writer also mentioned that such disease derives from lack of self esteem and skills as well as low performance.
My opinion, its a way to escape from reality.

For Arabic readers, please click here to read the article.

The story about employee 'S'

Notes of life

Greetings,
It’s been a while, away from the visual life, the Second Life. All of things been going on, engagements, weddings, death, ups and downs, challenges, teamwork, etc.

Oman in ‘Second Life’ Map
About the Second Life, Sultanate of Oman government is planning to promote it self as a country in Internet-based virtual world ‘Second Life’ for tourism purposes; its just an idea, hope it will pay.

Engagements and weddings
last week Big Moe has finally tied the knot for second time alhamdulillah, and the wedding reception will be after one week from now.

End of life
As birth is the start of life so Death is the end of the life, that’s the cycle of life no one knows how it ends, it can end in many forms including predation, disease, habitat destruction, senescence, malnutrition and accidents or physical injury; only God ‘Allah’ knows how it happens and what the reason behind it.

Why am I talking about death? It’s been one week since the death of my colleague who worked at the same building for some times but it was the first time I spoke to him was the day before he passed away to next life. He ended his journey on earth and he is now living in his new home ‘the grave’ and started the next journey of life until the judgment day, if Allah will his last journey will be in the Haven, and I believe he will be, he may already have beautiful castles because of been devoted Muslim and his support to the people in need in form of donations etc with out boosting or telling to anyone.

When I saw him, I seen a glow in his face, happiness and that made me believe he is a devoted Muslim.

Ups and downs/ challenges/ teamwork, etc.
I was feeling stressed for sometime because of work and studies, etc; I got tied up with allot of stuff at the same time, that messed me up for nearly three months. Thank God ‘Allah’ that I managed to sort some of things out and got through it.

It was a challenge for me and I managed to be my self, with out God and everyone who have supported me, I wouldn’t have managed to get through it. Teamwork and motivation makes a difference.

Addicted to ‘Owned’
I got addicted to ‘Owned’ (Own Your Friends! Give Human Gifts! Put yourself on the market and find out how much you’re worth!) by posting some photos, buying other people artistic photos, etc. I now worth over one million.

That’s all for now, time to go to bed, think of getting up to catch up with my studies.

Appraisal feedback

The appraisal feedbacks has gone up & down like the stock market, some were focussing on the grading in order to get the highest bonus & others were looking for a promotion or increment in salary.

Some people gone on strick for a day or two by not signing the appraisal because of the feedback & they argued allot. Some managers were two faced in front of thier team.

I decided to play it cool with them, after all playing politics with the shacks is importent, I signed the document & stated my proposals, I saw a shocked face on him but kept my voice as cool as I can, we'll see the final outcome soon.

I just remembed that someone told once, "you are too jr to understand big people's politics", and she's wrong. I learnt yelling, making a big fuss won't leed me to achieve anything in life.

God's mercy

I always remember things happens to me, which tends to go against me always tends to be in my side. I belive it's God's mercy to me because of my deeds as well as my parents & loved one's too.

One day I was angry from someone for not be consider my situation & asks me to do something, on my way to pick up the person, it was drizzling, I prayed to God to cure everyone who I care about, and give me the strength to calm down & it happened.

I was training my co-workers to use a new system that will be used internaly by my department, I managed to get good & usefull feedbacks that I was happy to accept it, some was about to impove my methods and skills of delivering the contents & become better presenter.

Dec 9, 2007

Its appraisal time

About a month ago, I started receiving loads of junk emails related to salary increments, promotions, appraisals, etc, in addition to the braking news about the salary raise in some of the AGCC up to 300% of the basic salary to keep up with increase in the commodities price & rent.

People started to get stressed for loosing thier own seats. Best wishes everyone. The panic started to go through under their skin, nightmares started to hunt them of any miss behaviours or mistakes they made, revising each assignment they made to reassure their self as their confidence is not shacky. Others prepar a speech to ensure their seat in the new hierarchy level.

Dec 8, 2007

Random thoughts while on the job

Finally completed my assignment & forwarded to my senior co-worker to finalise & draft the report.

I have to take all the work done by copy & past as well as scanning documents and uploading them to the Audit Management System then finalize it.

Dec 4, 2007

And the 1st round is over

We the champions completed the 1st round of the challenge (the physical challenge) & on our way to the next challenge, the series of challenges has just started and we are ready for it.

Burnt flesh

We been playing physical games, we been divided into several color codes women in pick, team spirit is gone high. I'm still battling.

Department day out

Now I am posting from Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa - Sultanate of Oman via my Nokia E65. I am having breakfast with my department co-workers at Samba rest in Al Waha hotel for the journy of the 2nd day out event of the year, but its my first day out with them.

Today I see everyone's casual look.

The Family Mentor

At my previous post I talked about my new project of creating a family journal & I'm in the process of getting the approval.

Today, I finally got it after sharing my idea to my aunt. She fully supporting me with the project & oversees the outcomes that will be a big advantage for everyone.

After finaly reached to an agreement, she mansioned something about me, that she has seen a big change in my personalily, that I became more confident in what I do & taking more responsibilites. On my side I feel I am more matured mentaly that I'm ready to take risks.

Another good news I have recieved that my teenaged cousins for the first time in there lives have enjoyed the family because we the elders made them feel that they are mature enough to let them sit with us & participate in different topics and now they are excited for the next monthly family gatherings.

I am happy with the outcome & that what I was expecting. My advice is always keep your family first, as you can't replace them.
